Ballast is material that is used to provide stability to a vehicle or structure. These are the large and heavy materials such as concrete, iron, or lead that are carried to maintain proper trim. The ballast also includes coarse gravel or crushed rock laid to form a bed for roads or railroads.
It is extracted by placing the weight as low as possible so that the maximum righting moment can be extracted from the given mass. Traditional forms of ballast carried inside the hull were stones or sand.
